Japanese Women in the Workplace
Since the 1970's, American women have been participating in the workforce in similar capacities as their male counterparts. However, the kind of progressive cultural and societal standards that allow for this trend is not normal for all developed countries. Such is the case for Japan. Schumpeter's Land of the Wasted Talent highlights the traditional role that Japanese women still maintain and how it affects their ability to participate in the workplace. But unless Japan begins making use of its female talent, firms will soon be competing for a shrinking Japanese workforce and likely face a shortage of workers. Might Japanese women experience the same "quiet revolution" that American women experienced in the last century?
